How to Make Your Garage More Secure

how to make your garage more secure

The garage is a part of the home that is easily overlooked when it comes to your home security. This is not a part of your home that you want to overlook. Not only do many garages hold valuable items, but they often also provide another way into your home. This guide provides you with all the things you can be doing to improve your garage security.

Make the Area Around your Garage Lighter

There are two ways to increase the brightness of an area.

  1. Use lights with motion sensors. While you can use static lighting, lights with motion sensors are more likely to alert you or your neighbors to activity around your garage. Static lights, on the other hand, are always on, giving would-be criminals the lighting to scout out their quarry before they try anything.
  2. The second way does not require any form of technology; however, it does require a bit of thought. A garage surrounded by trees, hedges, or other large plants automatically has lots of darker places to hide. By removing or trimming back vegetation around the garage you can make it lighter and safer.

Secure Your Garage Windows

Locks and alarms are excellent ways to secure your windows. Everyone thinks about placing locks on their doors, but they don’t always consider the windows. Be sure that your windows have a sturdy lock that is not accessible outside the home. For extra security, small alarms and motion sensors on your windows can inform you if someone is attempting to break in.

There is, however, another approach worthy of consideration. If you live in a hurricane zone you may consider installing impact windows in your garage.

Not only do impact windows help to defend your home against the destructive power of a hurricane but they withstand debris being thrown at them repeatedly. This means that having impact windows makes it far less likely that someone can break a window to gain access to your home.

Use CCTV and Other Technology

CCTV is always an option for improving home security, but it can be expensive. With the increase of smartphone technology, micro cameras, and Bluetooth many similar options have become available. You can use this technology to keep an eye on your home even when you are not at home.

Some security CCTV systems come with the advantage of alerting local officers or security to a situation at the source making them a great option for commercial sites.

Smart technology, like doorbell cameras and smart home systems, can alert your phone to ongoing activity no matter where you are. The more expensive pieces can, like the CCTV, alert local security to a situation when you need it to.

Whatever you decide to use, you want to place it in a high, secure location so it is not easy to reach. This high-angle view can give your camera a clear indication of anyone on approach to your home.

Protect Your Garage Keys

Give your garage fob and/or keys the same consideration that you give to your house and car keys. Keep them in a secure location when not in use. Like any other items of value, don’t leave them inside your car in plain view.

Lock Your Garage

This may seem like common sense, but a lot of people still leave their garage doors open as commonplace. According to The Zebra, 9% of burglaries gain entrance to the home through the garage door. Whatever lock you are using, you can decrease the chance of someone getting into your garage by locking your garage doors when they are not in use.
